![]() ![]() Plasq today introduced Comic Life 2, the latest version of plasq's award winning photo comic creation software for Mac OS X. Plasq Releases Comic Life 2.0 for Mac - Published on 12/09/10 Plasq's full press release is available via the big button below. There's a free 30-day trial, so check it out! This is the biggest revamp for the core Comic Life product in its five-year history, and it's fantastic to see one of our favorite indie studios putting out refreshed products right before the Mac App Store hits. (Note that Comic Life Magiq is $20 more costly it adds image edit/warp controls and other high-end features, but it isn't file-compatible with CL2 yet.) It's a $9.95 upgrade for existing users and $19.95 to move to a five-machine family pack. Yesterday Plasq released version 2.0 of Comic Life, which adds template support, Facebook integration, advanced word-balloon controls and more. I've used it for refrigerator magnets, party invites, birth announcements, process documentation and more over the years. The $30 app, from the incubator firm of Skitch, is a delightful (if at times a bit busy) way to take your favorite pictures, add quick captions and layouts, and immediately print or share them with a click. Plasq's Comic Life is my favorite quick turnaround tool, smile inducer and fun photo mauler. If you pushed me and narrowed the question a bit to, "Is there a Mac app that you keep coming back to when you have to create something cool in a very short period of time?" the answer is easy. From time to time, I'm asked to name my favorite Mac app - as if such a designation was even possible (I love you all equally, kids, don't worry). ![]() ![]() ![]()

You can see more examples of the difference between normal scaling and the ML Super Resolution option in the post on the Pixelmator blog. This is one area where an eGPU connected to your MacBook Pro will definitely make a speed difference. The tradeoff is that the ML method requires a lot of compute power, specifically dependent on the GPU in your system. ML Super Resolution is available in the Image Size menu or when using the Transform tool. The machine learning model tries to understand the content of the image, which lets it fill in semantic details as the image is resized. Traditional scaling algorithms like Nearest Neighbor or Bilinear rely on simple mathematical combinations of nearby pixels. It’s a new scaling mode that can allow you to increase images without the blurriness you come to expect when you make a bitmap image larger than its original size. Pixelmator Pro are calling it ‘ML Super Resolution’. Just before the holidays, the Pixelmator Pro team have pushed out another update with an impressive new image resizing algorithm, powered by a machine learning model. ![]() ![]() ![]() Garrett told Springwise that a ballpark figure for the manufacture and installation of the AuraGen is around £7,000 (around €8,250). One of the benefits of the AuraGen design is its low cost of installation. Website: /programme/young-innovators/Ī key consideration for any home energy system is the cost. #HOME WIND POWERED GENERATORS PORTABLE#Springwise has also spotted a portable wind turbine weighing only 10 kilogrammes. Another designer has developed a wind turbine ‘wall’ that can be tailored to the aesthetic of each home. The AuraGen is not the only domestic wind power solution spotted by Springwise. Thanks to the AuraGen design, Garrett received recognition as a winner of this year’s UK Young Innovators Awards. He told Springwise that his experiences working in the wind stuck with him and gave him the idea for a roof-mounted wind turbine. The idea for the AuraGen came to Garrett as a teenager when he worked on scaffolding and rooftops with his dad. ![]() This latter point means that the AuraGen could potentially be used to charge electric vehicles overnight. This increases stability, meaning that the turbine itself can be wider, leading to greater power generation.Ĭompared to solar panels, wind turbines have a much higher power density and can operate at night. This is an important benefit as, by using the height of the house, the design does not require a tall support structure. In fact, the shape of the roof enhances the turbine’s performance, acting like an aerofoil to increase the velocity of air going through the turbine.Ī frame is used to directly attach the turbine to the roof. The new turbine is omni-directional, which means it works no matter which way the wind is blowing, and the technology is tailored to work most effectively on pitched roofs. Moreover, the design is simple-reducing maintenance requirements-and offers good power performance. The AuraGen’s unique design aims to minimise a phenomenon called ‘dynamic stall’ where factors such as wind shear and turbulence place a heavy load on turbine blades – reducing their lifespan. To reverse this situation, UK engineer Joe Garrett has developed the AuraGen – a new vertical axis wind turbine designed to be mounted on homes and commercial buildings. But while solar panels on domestic homes are an increasingly common sight in urban and suburban areas, far fewer houses are installed with wind turbines. Spotted: For homeowners looking to power their house with renewable energy, wind power offers a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to solar panels. ![]() ![]() ![]() While the Russian soldiers make slurs against the Ukrainians, this is nothing compared to the institutionalised hazing rituals the young recruits experience at the hands of the older sailors and officers. The only meaningful escape from their small town is joining the navy with all its beatings, rotten food, cramped conditions and hazing rituals.Įarly in the film there are scenes of “friendly” rivalry between the Ukrainian sailors and Russian soldiers based in Crimea: they play off against each other at tug-of-war and arm wrestling. When “The Strangers: Prey at Night” finally reveals the reasoning behind Dollface, Pin-Up Girl and Man in the Mask’s crime rampage, it lacks the chill of the original’s unsettlingly simple, “Because you were home.” It’s also less grim than its predecessor, which may please more viewers while they’re watching, but ultimately leaves less of an impression than it might if it took a bleaker route to the end.For whatever reason, there’s been a slew of home invasion movies over the past decade. Roberts also brings in more ’80s music late in the game to hammer in his influences, including the best use of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” this side of “Old School.” Cinematographer Ryan Samul previously worked on Jim Mickle’s mood-infused genre films like “Cold in July” and “Stake Land,” and his lensing elevates this movie, especially in its final act. ![]() Things get more stylish as the film approaches its climax, taking an hour to make good on the visual promise made in its opening moments. ![]() ![]() It’s a frustrating experience at times, but the script from Ben Ketai and “The Strangers” filmmaker Bryan Bertino eventually allows the family to take some satisfying actions in the second half of the film. THE STRANGERS PREY AT NIGHT TRUE STORY MOVIEHorror movie characters aren’t generally known for their brains, but these ones make enough bad choices that audiences won’t be able to help yelling at the screen (at least ours couldn’t). There’s little that feels fresh here, with genre tropes and tricks appearing throughout, though fans may be too terrified to care. “The Strangers: Prey at Night” not only follows in the original film’s footsteps, but those tread by France’s “Them” and a variety of other home-invasion films. Roberts’ sequel amps up the unease by beginning with the tagline, “Based on true events.” But it’s unclear what real-life story it’s based on, other than its inspiration by “The Strangers,” which also made the same claim. Also, the lack of supernatural influence and their everyday attire make them seem as if they could be real - versus the vampires, demons and ghosts that inhabit other films. And like its predecessor, “The Strangers: Prey at Night” works because of the simultaneous familiarity and unfamiliarity of these villains with their covered, immovable faces, near-silence and seemingly unknowable motives for murder. The three original villains - Dollface, Pin-Up Girl and Man in the Mask - all return, or at least their costumes do. So when violence enters the park in the form of masked killers, there’s no one to hear the family’s screams as they move between empty homes, trying desperately to stay alive. “Everybody leaves after Labor Day,” Cindy explains. The family plans an overnight stop with relatives who spend the off-season at a trailer park of summer homes. ![]() |
